The Life and Times of a House Husband.....what is this blog about you may wonder? I'm just spouting stuff that comes to mind. Its really just a place to type something not on facebook. You know that place where the rest of the internet goes... Musings on airplanes, racing, hockey, and a bunch of other stuff. Most images are gathered from sites around the web except for the hockey pix which are taken by me.

Intensity
Poppy has been playing as a defenseman almost exclusively and her teams record stands at 6-1 which is great considering last year her team was 0-14-1 after the regular season. She also mad the Columbus North Stars select team and they have decided to play at the AA level in order to improve every player and really challenge the kids. Their travel schedule is really going to be hectic come January and February. They have played one game and steamrolled the opponents easily. These kids are going to be good.
As a parent I'm very proud of my kids although i'm getting worn out with hockey 6 days/nights a week from September to March.....

Goodbye to the F-111 Aardvark
Back in May I blogged about the upcoming final retirement of the last in service General Dynamics F-111 of the RAAF. Well that time has come for the beast some 46 years after the first prototype first flew. I won't rehash everything I wrote back then, but that day is now almost here. On Dec 2, 2010 the F-111 will be retired and for fan's of this massive strike plane its a sad day. These beasts were operated by the US Air Force in a few variants, including long-range strike, and with the EF-111 Raven variant, electronic warfare. In USAF service F-111s participated in the Vietnam War, the US attack on Libya in 1986, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991 against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. They were retired in 1997 by the USAF and lived another 13 years in the sky in Australia until now. The last former USAF F-111G was retired in 2007 by the RAAF.
As noted in the previous blog these will be replaced by FA-18F's built by Boeing and fitted for various roles until the real replacement for the F-111 arrives in the form of the F-35 JSF. The FA-18's are holding the door open and will do an excellent job in their multi role capacity. In fact the FA-18's have less range and are slower than the F-111 although they are much more efficient to operate and have modern communications equipment which transmits data seamlessly between airborne platforms. Perhaps more than any other deficiency, it is this shortcoming which has pushed the RAAF to retire the type even before its original replacement is ready to be fielded.
But to any airplane or airshow fan the most missed aspect of the F-111 is the dump and burn......

The Inside Job; Movie Trailers on HDNet
One sad point is last week on The Ultimate Trailer show the host, Robert Wilonsky announced that he is moving along. This saddens me as despite his obvious difference in political agendas from mine I trusted his film choices. While he repeatedly pointed out he had a face for print journalism and not TV, he managed to capture my attention for several years and I will miss his suggestions. High Definition TV was in its infancy when he came to the first full time HD channel and filled a niche with several hosting gigs. While so many people complain about the trailers at the start of a film he developed a television show dedicated to clips--2 minutes at a time. In fact HDNet now has 3 shows.... While I never met him I considered him a friend. I even sent a few emails for suggestions of old trailers and a few of them even showed up. Thanks Robert!

Double Dutch Treat for Chile
Ok so that was a lame attempt at a headline. In just a couple months the Netherlands will begin to send more of its older F-16's to Chile where they will join 28 others in protecting the skies over Chile. This is not the first time the Netherlands has sold older F-16's to Chile as 18 of the 28 currently in service are A and B models formerly flown by the Netherlands. Chile currently flies 10 C/D models purchased directly from Lockheed. The new/old jets are currently being prepared at Leeuwarden Air Base for their trip to Chile in early November. In total 6 jets will be ferried to Chile and supported by a McDonnell Douglas KDC-10 Tanker/transport.

The Hockey Season has Begun Again
It's that time of year again. Hockey Season!!!!! In our household its always a huge deal. This year we are stepping it up. Frudoch is playing Travel Hockey and tonight was voted to wear the C as Captain of the Columbus Capitals PeeWee team. It gets fully going on Sunday with 2 games against a foe from Northeastern Ohio. The Capital will be playing in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League so I will get to know the drive to the Cleveland area really well over the next 5 months. Wish me luck!

The F-15 Has Some Life Left in Her Wings
The newest version of Boeing's air superiority monster designated F-15SE or Silent Eagle made waves a few weeks back becoming the first F-15 to fire an AMRAAM in flight with no adverse effect on the performance of the aircraft. As you can see in the photos from Boeing the newest version of the F-15 is borrowing some of the tricks learned in other advanced aircraft and with this plane its weapons are tucked inside a newly designed Conformal Weapons Bay (CWB) instead of hanging underneath and flying dirty.
"I've been flying F-15s for more than 20 years, but this flight was different from all others," said Boeing F-15 Chief Test Pilot Dan Draeger. "This first launch of an AMRAAM from the F-15's internal weapons bay opens a new era for the F-15 and for strike fighter capability in the dominance of the F-15 Eagle.
"The F-15, CWB and missile performed exactly as we predicted," Draeger continued. "The Silent Eagle continues the F-15's role as the most versatile strike fighter aircraft ever built."
These updates are not the only goodies that Boeing has been studying for future F-15's either. Lots of potential upgrades will be available if other nations choose to buy the F-15. Notice the slightly canted tails on the photo below. While it's not a 5th generation fighter its VERY close for much less.....

CF-18 Crash at Air Show in Lethbridge County Canada
The photos and video of this past Friday's crash of a hornet illustrate the positives and negatives of the modern airshow. While the negatives certainly outweigh the positives here with the loss of the aircraft. The reconstruction of this crash will be easier because the crew of air show fans were present on a Friday practice day to capture video and photos to help solve what happened. While a couple theories are floating around it is too soon to guess and while this is a standard maneuver for this jet it illustrates the danger the modern jet pilot faces as they put on the display. Thankfully the pilot was not seriously injured in this crash.

That Air Show Feeling
Last week I got reacquainted with one of the best adrenaline rushes on the planet. The modern air show supported by the US Government air superiority forces. Yes last weekend was the Dayton Air Show in Dayton Ohio and I carved a day out of the packed summer to take the kids on the short 75 minute drive to watch the practice day. Since the show is only a Saturday Sunday affair we technically were not at the show, but we were 10 feet from the airport property and had great views of all the comings and goings of the regular commercial flights as well as the practice of the air show performers. The highlight was of course the US Navy Blue Angels. Fat Albert also did 'his' demo doing things in a Lockheed C-130 that seem impossible. The Blue Angels, a group of men and women perform astounding feats with their F-18's. Using a variety of A, B, and C models they fly within inches of each other and do all sorts of amazing acts. It truly takes your breath away to be able to witness their performance. To get to watch and not spend a penny makes it that much better. I've seen them several times in person and each time is like the first. Add in that we also got to watch the F/A-18F Super Hornet do its demo and the arrivals of F-15, F-16, T-38 and several other military cargo and attack planes made for a great day. Even a pristine restored DC-3 made an appearance. While I was unable to make it back for the actual show I did get to enjoy the sights and sounds and look forward to catching up with the Blues again at Cleveland's Air Show on Labor Day!
One more thing. I took these photos and many more. A newer camera has certainly helped. Soon I'll get a DSLR and get closer to the pro's that take so many great pics.

The Boys are Back
Well actually no. It refers to two hooligans that will be back out terrorizing all humanity courtesy of that once great network known as MTV. The "boys" of course are Beavis and Butthead. Now I know that their form of UHHH HUH HUH HUH humor is not for everybody, but how can you not laugh at this. Ahh memories.... In fact when I graduated from The Ohio State University I was Beavis. Yes I donned a cap with the trademark Beavis hair busting thru my cap. It was too cool and amongst the 7000 graduates that day I was by far the easiest to pick out with a foot tall bright yellow block of 'cheese' on my head. I even made an appearance on the televised processional shown on the local PBS station. Almost 8 years later I was able to get a copy of that tape from a contact at the station and I'll find it and burn it to DVD soon. In any case music videos will be returning to MTV if only in pieces and we can all thank Beavis and Butthead for it.
Lets hope for good weather this weekend!

The Clock strikes Midnight For The General Dynamics F-111
The General Dynamics F-111 is a venerable high speed fighter/bomber and as of 2010 is only operated by one country. Australia is now phasing them out and is replacing it with the Boeing FA-18F Super Hornet. The F-111 is famous for its long flame trails while it dumps fuel, but did you ever wonder how it was done? Watch the video from Flightglobal and see how it performs this trick and learn just a bit about why these beasts are being replaced. The RAAF will utilize the FA-18 in a true multi-role way and will be much more aggressive in flying the plane. Much like we use the F-15 in the Air Force. t has always been so cool to see the flame trails from the RAAF at the Surfers Paradise Indycar race and the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, but as they say... All good things must come to an end. It has arrived for the F-111.

Andrews AFB Air Show Open House
Over the previous weekend Andrews Air Force Base opened its doors for an open house and air show. The weather was perfect and here are some amazing shots. If you have never been to an air show you really should go and experience one. There are many free shows across the country as well as many high powered shows featuring the big acts like the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Golden Knights, Viper East (F-16), Raptor F-22, and the solo acts like John Mohr and Patty Wagstaff among dozens of acts. Many local airports host free shows put on by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and these are so much fun with vintage warbirds like B-17's or B-25's. Sometimes even a P-51 Mustang will be there. In any case enjoy some great shots from Andrews!

Montreal Canadiens to the Finals!
A far cry from my kind of music, but totally appropriate after Montreal SPANKED the Pittsburgh Penguins last night in the final game at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. Crybaby Crosby was his usual self during this season and looked incredibly tired. I do feel bad for Mario Lemuix who I had a chance to talk with earlier this year on a visit to Columbus, but thats the nature of a game 7. The person most excited after anyone associated with Montreal has to be Alexander Ovechkin since the Habs did the same thing to the 2 strongest Eastern Conference teams. Enjoy the Annakin Slayd and lets see if the Habs can keep it going to the Stanley Cup.

No The 737-800 Can't Land Itself
People that fly today are under the impression that its fairly easy to hop on a plane and get anywhere they want safely and securely. They get that impression because most pilots are professional and operate by the book. Accidents are something we only think about when we see them every 6 or 9 months on the nightly news. While today's flying is extremely safe its important to remember that WHO is flying the plane makes all the difference. When you book a flight in the US you have reasonable assurances that the captain is capable and highly trained and for most of the mainline flights you are correct. However regional airlines and foreign airlines you just don't know. Case in point the above video on the Turkish Air Boeing 737-800 that crashed last year on final to Schiphol. This modern plane fell out of the sky with 2 captains and a co pilot all in the cockpit. This video animation shows how a small technical issue led to a major airline accident on Feb. 25, 2009. While my point is not to scare anyone it is to do your homework when choosing an airline. Its not always the price of the ticket in determining which airline to fly. Especially overseas where maintenance can be spotty at best and the regulation of airlines and air traffic can be non existent.

Brampton Canadettes 43rd Annual All Girls Hockey Tournament
Heartland Selects Atom BB Team
I'm back and have begun to recover from our recent adventure to Brampton Ontario for the all girls hockey tournament. It was a fantastic experience despite the 1-2 overall record. Considering the team had never had a practice and that 5 of the girls were completely new the girls did admirably well. They lost the first game 2-0 with the winning goal coming with only 1:46 remaining in the final period and an empty net goal for the insurance with 6 seconds left. Our second game we were clearly outmatched by a much larger team and despite the lopsided size match-ups we only allowed 4 goals in a 4-0 loss. After losing both games we knew the girls could not move on so we focused on team play and scoring. The third game we matched up size wise and played a very hard game and despite giving up a goal midway thru the second period the girls did not panic. A late goal by one of our new players from Columbus Ohio tied it up. We were then presented with a fierce final few minutes where the opposing team pulled their goalie as they needed a win to advance. Our girls responded and a shot from the mid-line connected for a goal and complete joy for the girls. They nearly added another empty net goal a few seconds later with another long shot that bounced of the pipe. When the buzzer sounded we came away with a 2-1 win.
Poppy skating defensively in the Away Sweater
To put this into perspective this tournament had 408 teams entered. ALL of them were girls and in Ontario this is considered to be an event like the super bowl of girls hockey. In the 18 team BB Travel division we were the only team from the USA. I scoured the entry lists and only saw one other team from the United States in the PeeWee division. The teams from across Canada put this on their bulletin boards at the beginning of the year and let me say its an incredible way for them to end a season. Our team was named the Heartland Selects and was comprised of girls from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The core group had played together in some tournaments and were the girls from NC, TN, KY, and IN. For this tourney the team manager and coaches scoured rosters of teams with girl players entered in tournaments across the midwest. Luckily for us Poppy had played in a tournament in Detroit and this roster was one that they got both players from our organization. In fact the other girl from the Capital Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) played of Frudoch's team last season even though she is the same age as Poppy. One other girl from the Columbus area was chosen as well from CCYHA and she was a great addition. All the girls wore the uniform of the Louisville Stallions Travel Hockey Team for this event and as luck would have it Poppy got #10 which is the number she has always worn and was also her big brothers number too. For this tournament both home and away sweater were required. The girls looked so great!
Being as this was my second trip to Toronto and the GTA in the past 2 weeks I was able to spend more time relaxing instead of trying to pack all the things into a weekend you might do out of town. Poppy was happy that her passport was used again and the border crossings were pretty simple both ways. For this trip I even drove my CLK500 so the trip was much more enjoyable from the driving perspective. Our Hotel was very new and located just a mile or so from Toronto's Pearson International Airport and the departures went right overhead all day and night. It was really nice to see the heavies that we don't get here in C-Bus. We saw lots of B777's and B767's. A few B747's and heard but did not see the A380. Lots more A330's, A300's, and A310's as well. Plus add the countless B737's, B757's, A320's from WestJet, Air Canada and all the other carriers. Would I have preferred to be on the other side of the hotel to see them climbing? Of course, but I did see them as they flew off and got to hear them as well. Frudoch was quite jealous he did not get to go.
So it was a fun productive weekend and all of the parents and coaches thought if we could have had even one practice then the outcomes of the first two games would have been different. Goes to show you that girls can play hockey!

Take Off To The Great White North Eh?
Ahh. Once again I'm in Toronto for hockey. You could say I'm getting pretty familiar with border crossing and the 7 hour trip from central Ohio to the GTA. Today Poppy and I did it again so she can take part in the Brampton Canadettes all girls hockey tournament. This year there are more than 400 all girl teams entered. In our division we are the only team from the USA. We are playing in the AA 10U division so the competition should be fierce. Poppy does know one other player on the team as that girl played in her league this season and was on Frudoch's team last year. Its going to be a great few days!
Fortunately for us we are staying in a brand new Hilton Garden Inn just off the airport property. Lets just say the sights and sounds are excellent for an airplane lover like me. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of the Airbus A380 double decker as it makes daily trips in and out of Pearson. I brought the camera and will hopefully have some time to snap a few shots of the heavy's we rarely see at Port Columbus.
Record high temps up this way today so I hope that the weather and hockey provide for a most memorable weekend. Its a shame Frudoch and his mom could not make it. Hope the Easter Bunny can find Poppy up here......

Airline Wars?
The clip above is an ad currently airing on TV from Southwest Airlines and it shows a slightly disguised AirTran plane. Below is the "unofficial official" response from Airtran. Or al least what their response would be if they aired it. Your move Southwest. Personally the AirTran ad is EXACTLY why I don't fly Southwest unless I have no other choice.

Whirlwind Tour-Columbus to Toronto to Niagara Falls and back to Cbus
In any case it was my first visit to Toronto and lets say the traffic is indeed legendary. The city is very cool and we enjoyed seeing a few sites including the Hockey Hall of Fame. We also took in a Toronto Marlies AHL game with a thrilling ending over the Abbotsford Heat. We then headed back down the road to Niagara Falls for an "off season" stop. Lets just say the place was pretty dead. Good thing too. $96 for dinner for 4 at IHOP. $130 at Outback Steakhouse. Man its pricey. Saw the falls although at 39 degrees and rainy it was tough. Now back home and trying to catch up on sleep.
All in all it was fun, but it could have been so much better if the hockey portion would have been fair. Poppy and I return in 2 weeks for a huge girls tournament. I can't believe I'm doing it again.

Sully's Last Flight
Yesterday was a weird day for reasons I won't get into. It did however give me ammo for 2 blogs so I will knock this quick one out. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger retired after a 30 year career as a commercial pilot. Just over a year ago nobody knew who he was, but the whole "miracle on the Hudson" thing sort of changed that. Yes he returned to flying a few months back, but for all intents and purposes he could never be the same guy he was before 1549. He will forever be known as the guy that made the one in a million landing and that probably made it difficult to do his day job. Sully never sought out the fame. It just happened and in todays internet age the public could not get enough. I'm sure the millions of cards and letters were fine, but the daily updates of his flights on the internet and he constant handshakes and photos have taken their toll. Especially for a guy who is very quiet. I'm currently reading his book and it paints a picture of a nice family man who was very well trained and just wanted to fly from the time he was young. He's done that and now its time to move on.
Yesterday he took off from Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) for his last flight before retirement, US Airways Flight 1167 to Charlotte North Carolina. Joining him was Jeff Skiles who was also beside him on that fateful day last January. Following the push back from the gate, the flight was given priority taxi clearance on Taxiway Alpha for a westerly departure on runway 27R. At the end of the taxiway, Ft Lauderdale Tower ATC communicated a very nice tribute to Sully before giving him his clearance to line up and hold. In his usual professional voice, the reply to the tribute was “Thank You. Confirm Cactus 1167 cleared to line up and hold.” The take off clearance was equally professionally acknowledged and the Airbus A321 (N181UW) rolled down runway 27R and climbed out into the cloudy South Florida skies. With that takeoff completed he moved on his life. I wish him well.

First Flight of the 747-8F Today
Today Boeing sent its newest creation to the sky for its first flight. While it may look like a normal 747, this one is all new and the future of super jumbo flight. Like its stablemate the 787 this plane is cutting edge technology. The engines are the GE GenX and are the most powerful in the world for the type. They were originally designed for the 787, but were adapted for this monster.
In the background of a couple of these photos you can see the modified Boeing 747-400 Dreamlifter which is used to transport the pieces of the 787 from plants around the world to Seattle for final assembly. Currently there are 4 Dreamlifters in the fleet. Boeing will also have a second assembly site in Charleston South Carolina to assemble the 787 to meet the huge backlog of orders.
Airbus did not want to see this plane built as their A380 has been slow selling and has had lots of small development issues. While Boeing has numerous orders for this as a freighter Airbus killed off the A380F variant due to lack of interest. Boeing has about 32 orders for the passenger version of this 747-8I for Intercontinental. The next 9 month will see 2 others join this one for flight testing with deliveries due to begin in late December. Congratulations to Boeing!

Nice to be home
No issues with heat this year. Just a couple of backed up commodes...... No wonder everybody was happy to see me. The Convention was good and my region produced both the Rookie of the Year as well as the Presidents Cup winner. Its a good time to be the RE.
Moving along the Oscar nominations were today and for the first time in forever I had actually seen several films that were nominated.... Up in the Air, The Lovely Bones, The Blind Side, District 9 among them. Making that even more interesting is I saw them all free over the internet. Yes that is so cool Ask me where....

I'm Outta Here for a Week
Thats right its time to hit the road to Las Vegas. Not much gambling for me though. I will be attending the 2010 SCCA National Convention at the South Pointe. Its a nice place if you like being cooped up out in the middle of a dessert away from all the fun. I was there last year and unfortunately did not get to In & Out Burger. Not gonna happen this year as I will have access to a car. Since I'm the experienced guy going this year I will be the guide to the touristy places like Hoover Dam and the strip. I hope to get out to Nellis AFB for a few minutes to watch some fighter jet action. I am flying Delta and will be flying home for the first time on a 757-300 which is the stretched version of he 757. That means its an old Northwest jet and has no in seat entertainment either... I will bring my psp and ipod touch. Maybe even my laptop. Looks like my flight out is on a 767, but its changed 8 times since I booked it that who knows. Please turn the heat on for me!

Here we go again
Saturday morning dawned with an early game at Gilmour Academy and the results were similar with a 7-1 loss. Luckily for me I had to head back home for an awards banquet and my wife drove up in time for me to tell her to check out of the hotel as we were eliminated from moving on after starting 0-2. Things continued with a 6-1 loss in the afternoon. I don't know, but I think not having a team name as well as a practice probably doomed this group from the beginning....
Poppy's team was in Cleveland too, but for this event she was not on the roster. It figures as that team won the whole tournament. She joins them in Detroit in a couple weeks.... It would have been nice as her main team is 0-12-1 on the year. The 6 teams supposedly dived to be equal has produced a team with no losses and a team with no wins. That sure sounds fair huh?
In other news Mark McGuire used steroids. No really he did. He admitted it. Barry Bonds and Roger "the liar" Clemmens still deny having used them....
